New Drivers and Car Insurance

New drivers are extremely expensive to insure. They are almost as expensive to insure as people with poor driving records. If you are a young driver, particularly a young male, you are also considered to be a higher risk.  Young men often feel invincible, and therefore make silly driving mistakes. They can be reckless, drive too fast to show off and have slower response times due to inexperience. One thing is certain, new drivers of all genders and ages need insurance. There are many options out there, and it is important to explore each and every one of them before making a decision.

New Drivers and Car Insurance

What can you do to make sure you get the best car insurance rates?  Well, first start out by researching various insurance companies.  Find out the costs, the pros, the cons, what is included and if there are any special programs to get better rates.  At many companies there are benefits that come with good high school grades. Young adults with better grades can usually get a discount on their insurance rate as it shows a certain level of responsibility.  You can also check to see if there is a discount applied if you take a defensive driving course, or also possibly a winter driving course that teaches you how to drive on ice or snow.

You can also check with the insurance companies to see if they will lower the rates after 6 months of no accidents or claims. The more time you are driving with no accidents or claims, the better rates and packages you can get.  If you haven’t yet purchased your car, you will also want to research what the insurance company would charge you to insure that vehicle.  The sportier and the faster the vehicle is, the more expensive your insurance will be.  If you get a similar but older version of the vehicle it is likely to cost less.  However, if it is old enough and in good enough shape, at some point the value starts to increase again as the cost to repair or replace the vehicle also goes up.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you can bundle more insurance coverage through your agent.  Perhaps you are renting a place and need to get rental coverage, or perhaps you own your home and need mortgage insurance.  If you bundle your car insurance with rental or mortgage insurance you can get a break in both coverages.  You should also consider health or life insurance bundled in to that package, or extra coverage through a rider for higher dollar items, such as jewelry.  It never hurts to ask for any extra discounts they may have that can be bundled, and those price breaks may come with less service or coverage.

Overall, in order to keep the cost of your insurance as low as possible, evaluate the cost to cover your car, no accidents, tickets or claims, try to bundle more than one insurance in to your package and stay out of trouble and focus on good driving skills.
